Pacific Crest Trail - Day: -2

Start: San Diego, CA
End: San Diego, CA
Miles: 0
The excuses to come to San Diego for a couple days ahead of starting the PCT were 1. Catch up with a couple old colleagues who have turned into good friends, and 2. Take a medical exam for my Canadian permanent residency application.
If driving through 4 hours of Southern California traffic was a great reminder of why walking away from American society for a few months sounds like a wonderful reprieve, answering the same medical history questions 4 separate times drove it home.
- Online check-in forms
- Office check-in forms with pen, paper, and clipboard
- Nurse examination
- Doctor examination
No, I don’t smoke cigarettes, no I’m not taking any medications, Yes, I drink 6-12 cervezas a week.
I’m starting the PCT at 6’2”, 208 lbs (fully clothed, shoes on) with a blood pressure of 125 / 89. Not bad for staring down 40 at the end of the trail.
Pacific Beach - San Diego, CA

I attempted to explain to Kristin the cultural zeitgeist that was MTV’s The Real World: San Diego while driving down Grand Avenue towards Pacific Beach (or PB if we stop being fake and start being real) but failed miserably to capture how important watching manufactured drama play out in other people’s lives was at the time.
Somehow I remember the original Real World: San Diego being based in Pacific Beach, but it looks like their house was in Point Loma (PL in local parlance). Maybe PB was where they worked and/or threw up behind clubs? I’ll never know, because there’s zero chance it’s worth even a cringe based rewatch.

La Jolla, CA
The sidewalk patio at Jose’s in La Jolla is an all-time place to people watch and day drink. The breaded, fried fish tacos were excellent, as were the service and margaritas.

The sea lion cove at La Jolla is an early front runner for the worst smelling place in California.
Torrey Pines State Beach, CA
