Pacific Crest Trail - Days 148-150 - Diamond Peak Wilderness and Willamette Pass

Start: Mile 1883.2
End: Mile 1932.1 - Irish Lake

Diamond Peak in the distance - yet another massive volcanic formation that was previously (and recently) much larger than it is today.

Looking south to Mt. Thielsen.

Morning clouds over Crescent Lake

Our first glance at the southernmost of the Three Sisters west of Bend / Sisters, OR.

I’m not sure what this nearly perfectly circular cinder cone is named, but it looked pretty cool surrounded by clouds and haze.

Summit Lake was perfection - the type of place where time slows down. We had second breakfast on a little peninsula surrounded by fresh huckleberries.

A merganser came to say hello.

Rocks vs. Trees … again.

Snow! In mid-August!

I thought these clouds were pretty incredible. Just really nice little clouds.

Diamond Peak resembles a huge stadium. I‘m not sure exactly how it arrived at its current form, but I imagine it erupted spectacularly and we’re looking at the aftermath.

Reds, whites, and blues

1900 miles! 750 to go!

This was a perfect description of the trail from Hidden Lake to Shelter Cove. Ponds upon ponds upon ponds.

Shelter Cove is a private campground and resort on Odell Lake. It’s popular with fisherman and retirees (same thing?) and had a great little store and grill.
It was our first real break since Ashland a couple hundred miles back after we sort of blew through Crater Lake when the power was out. We leaned into it and relaxed while catching up on some chores.

Two strong candidates for my name as an adult performer.

I don‘t do a ton of proofreading on this blog. Glass houses, Will. Glass houses.

The shower and laundry buildings at Shelter Cove were awesome. We each pumped $6+ of quarters into the coin operated showers.

Popsicle SpongeBob would be nightmare fuel if he wasn’t so delicious.

Our very sketchy manual can opener. We haven’t drawn blood yet. Knock on wood!

Our biggest chore was repairing our leaky sleeping pads. Kristin‘s pad already had 8+ repairs and we re-did 5 of them plus a couple of new leaks.
We used a combination of UV curing aqua seal, tenacious tape, and seam sealer.

All three of the Rosary Lakes were spectacula.

Merry Christmas 🎄!

After a pretty flat walk through a forest to Charlton Lake, we set out to push 4-5 miles through a burned area while the sun was low in the sky. It turned out to be one of the most memorable evenings yet - Very Tim Burtonesque.
